R&B crooner Sam Smith seemed the obvious choice for “Artist to Watch” at the Video Music Awards Sunday night – but the “Stay With Me” singer, 22, lost to girl band Fifth Harmony.
In a day and age dominated by individual artists and the resurgence of boy bands, Fifth Harmony stands out as one of few successful all-girl pop groups these days – the other ones being U.K. crossovers The Saturdays, Little Mix and G.R.L.
The Simon Cowell creation and former American “X Factor” contestants have gained worldwide fame like yet another famous Cowell group — One Direction — despite finishing third on the singing reality show.
Fifth Harmony, consisting of members Ally Brooke Hernandez, 21, Normani Hamilton, 18, Dinah Jane Hansen, 17, Camila Cabello, 17, and Lauren Jauregui, 18, signed to Cowell’s Syco Music and Epic Records after their turn on “X Factor” in 2012.
